PRIMARY SCHOOL AND GYM IN VISP
2024

Visp, Switzerland

Project in collaboration with Raphael Kadid and Barrault & Pressacco.
Landscape architecture BÖE Studio, Structure Pirmin Jung.
Through the repetition of a prefabricated timber structure, the new primary school embraces a terraced garden and preserves existing trees. At the northern end of the site, the new sports hall unfold its facades to provide shading, while maintaining the alignment with the adjacent facilities and the Vispa river. The elongated proportions of the school building and its curved shape harmoniously integrate the structure into the site and the topography. The shape and height make it possible to adapt to the neighboring residential buildings and at the same time limit the expansion of the campus and its impact on the new residential area. The enclosure of the newly created open space in the center of the campus creates a spacious garden that contrasts with the minerality of the existing outdoor areas.
The sports hall occupies part of the undeveloped area to the north of the site and is oriented along the canal. It is accessible either via Kleegärtenweg or via a new pedestrian path to the east. Thanks to the very compact layout, a maximum of garden space can be retained. Its location parallel to the existing sports hall leaves enough space for one of the two all-weather pitches, which will become a limited outdoor space.
The new buildings will be constructed entirely in timber from the floor slab upwards.
